Why Pinnacle™

Business users will find Pinnacle™ is an easy to use, powerful and lower cost alternative to proprietary document management systems. Technologists like the Pinnacle™open source development model and the ease with which they can extend and customize it.

Very tight integration with the Microsoft® Windows® desktop and Microsoft® Office® applications

Pinnacle™ provides tight integration with the Windows desktop and Microsoft Office applications, allowing Windows and Office users direct access to the document repository from their desktop and within Microsoft Office applications. Users can drag & drop files from their desktops and open and check-in documents from within Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.  Pinnacle™ goes beyond the WebDAV and CIFS interfaces provided by other vendors by allowing Windows desktop and Microsoft Office users the ability to manage metadata, versions and workflow from the Windows desktop.

Business users will find Pinnacle™ easy to use

"Because Pinnacle™ is totally focused on document management, the user interface is fast and efficient to use. Most business users will quickly feel proficient with the UI which is intuitive and looks professional. The dashboard view gives quick access to pending tasks and checked out documents. The context-sensitive Document Actions section on the left of the screen makes it clear what options are available within the current context."

Lower cost, higher value

Pinnacle™ costs far less to implement than expensive proprietary competitors and provides a cleaner document management implementation and stronger value-proposition than other open source document management products.

Very easy to implement and low infrastructure requirements

Pinnacle™ runs on the well-known and widely implemented Apache/MySQL/PHP (LAMP) stack and may be deployed using our powerful single-click installers which contain all required stack and 3rd-party software components. Many internal IT departments have experience with the Apache/MySQL/PHP stack and there are a multitude of inexpensive hosting providers that specialize in Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP hosting.

Since the Pinnacle™ LAMP stack is far thinner than proprietary and open source competitors, Pinnacle™ infrastructure requirements are far lower, further reducing your initial capital expenditure.

Very easy to customize and develop for

Pinnacle™, built on the Apache/MySQL/PHP (LAMP) stack, is very easy for in-house administrators and developers to customize and extend. PHP is a powerful and easy to use web development environment. In most domestic markets, PHP developers are in good supply and barriers to entry to learn PHP and MySQL skills are relatively low.

Pinnacle™ has a powerful plug-in architecture ensuring that additional functionality is very easy to develop and install on both new and existing deployments.

Open Source Developed

  • Pinnacle™ is developed in an Open Source community.  Open source reduces the cost of implementing and owning document management solutions because there are no or only small license costs. Support and maintenance costs are often substantially lower compared to commercial alternatives. Modest requirements for hardware, operating systems, databases, etc. allow for smaller investments for the overall implementation. Eliminating license fees also eliminates the disincentive to roll out the solution to more users and achieve wider spread adoption.
  • Open source inherently avoids vendor dependencies and lock-in. Open source projects focus on standard capabilities and allow for continuous operation even in the case the company or project behind the solution should decease. Due to its openness, skills and development resources are often broadly available and come at a lower cost compared to proprietary alternatives.
  • Open source drives for standards based solutions. Not only is the reference implementation of new standards in many cases an open source application (e.g. JackRabbit for JSR-170), open source projects also have a strong track record in adopting open standards quickly and adhering to them. Most open source document management applications, for example, support the Open Document Format standardized by OASIS. Organizations often have one or more content/document management solution already in place that have been deployed in a particular department to address very specific needs. As the organization moves towards having a company-wide DCM strategy, it becomes important for any new solution to be able to interoperate with existing solutions using industry standards.
  • Open source is proven within the infrastructure layer and provides a wealth of reusable components on all layers of the solution stack.
